Blog post 31 - Translation
Translation is the process of converting text and word from one language to another. Translated text provides insight about a particular culture or context from the original text. This allows individuals (who aren't as familiar with a certain language and context) develop their understanding of certain cultural practices and present insight on the context that the novel or text is placed in, as well as clarify any confusion of a particular historical context or culture.
Translated text provides several benefits; it reaches a wider audience and introduces insights in a particular aspect (eg. historical context). By reading translated text, it helps you understand cultural practices, especially when travelling; it influences your character to appreciate all the different aspects of a certain culture. Translation also allows you to understand cultural differences and identities.
Translators need to develop a unique style in language and genre to create an artistic yet not derive other synonyms and lose the central meaning of the original text. There are various challenges in translating a text: it may lose the pure essence of the meaning of a specific word or phrase which is established in the original text; some phrases and words may mean something else in another culture or society; the translated text needs to stay as closely balanced to the original text - to be able to recreate the same atmosphere and plot line that the original text has. And mostly, the knowledge and understanding the translator (author) has of the context of the original text.
Throughout this course, it is important to understand the significance of a translated text because it will help us understand the historical, social and cultural context impacts the way we perceive and value a text; and how figurative elements and style is not influenced by meaning buy influenced by context; and finally the value and attitudes the are presented in a text.
