Subject: Condemning 'Text speak" eroding school children's language skills.

Throughout the article there has been a few good points about children using text speak and how it has an impact on their lives, however, technology has helped us overcome ideas and also share important point or vocabulary that we never new about. Therefore, I disagree that text speak is inadequate to the generation.

The new generation is capable of creating a new language that maybe only they can understand and/or most adults. Thus, makes them bilingual. Being bilingual gives you an advantage to be able to learn new words easily, able to manipulate information in new areas or ways, creating new ideas and solution and good listening skills. Therefore, text speak may be the new language that is being created in front of our eyes, where the children are able to share and connect with others.

In your article it is stated that students would learn more vocabulary if they weren't on social media or the internet in general. I disagree, because a student maybe be online and discover new words. Whether on the internet, blogs or social media, there will always be words that they discover. However, it the student's responsibility to search up the meaning of the word. I believe that some students love being on the internet because it is easier and more compatible to use. (Books may also be easy and compatible to use), however we seem to forget that everything around us is evolving into something greater.

Yes, there may be inadequacy about Language in Technology, but keep in mind that technology allows us to access new dialects and insightful meanings. We kindly request that you consider some changes about ths article. There are always advantages and disadvantage about a certian mater in regards to children. Technology is not only negative; it has positives.

Yours Sincerely

  1. Hi Keasha! I enjoyed reading your blog post to the editor, I never thought about how text speak could be considered our generations "bilingual language", I am somewhat on board with your theory. I also agree with your statement " students may be online and discovering new words" although, i do believe that our generation does spend a lot of our free time on social media. BUT, some students do spend their free time reading, this means that the statement written in the newsletter is somewhat unrealistic. I love the fact that you have given a response explaining that there are always positives and negatives although technology wouldn't be considered a positive. Great Job !! Keep up the good work :)
