Blog post 26 - Wallace & Munro

In what ways can Wallace's theory about education  be applicable to writing of Alice Munro? Conclusion?

In the speech of David Foster Wallace, "This Is Water", he suggests that true freedom is acquired through education. He describes humans as being as being naturally or organically strained in a default setting. This means that different circumstances are surrounded by oneself and not on other people's circumstances or situations (feelings). By achieving freedom through our set of mind we are able to see different perspectives about different aspects of the world (from agriculture to traditions). In 'This is Water', Wallace provides the readers with deep thoughts and emotions about our everyday life 'typical day'- this ensures readers to gain empathy or sympathy thus making them more emotionally intelligent.

In the readings of Alice Munro, the theory of David Foster Wallace is applied where Alice uses a protagonist to share experiences of multiple emotions through different stages in a particular protagonist's life. This allows the reader to gain empathy for the protagonist and we develop a sense of recognizing our own as well as others emotions and feelings. Literature not only allows us to be self - aware of emotions and feelings but also helps us be morally adjusted.
Alice Munro creates human development through her characters in her texts. She does this by placing them into different circumstances which allows the character to deviate or direct them from their true ability. Alice Munro allows engages her readers to feel sympathy for her characters. for example, Alfrida.

Alice Munro's stories constantly evokes the idea of emotional intelligence by developing certain characteristics and human emotion, such as empathy and sympathy; which is evident in the text , 'The Moons of Jupiter'. Moreover, Alice's writing focuses on everyday situations  much like 'This is Water'. In Munro's writing's, she allows the reader to feel more engaged with the character because she mostly uses first narration.

In addition, we can see that Wallace's theory about education has an influence on literature, including that of Alice Munro. His theory allowed his audience to be more self - aware of emotions and feelings. (default setting)
