Blog Post 32 - Stream of Consciousness

A Stream of Consciousness is a technique used to allow an author to share and present internal thoughts, conflict and emotions of a character to make it seem direct towards the audience as well as make the character seem more realistic. Through this, an author uses various techniques such as interior monologue, third person narration and first person narration to reflect the character's internal processes. Within the novel of The Thief and the Dogs, Mahfouz uses these techniques effectively - more  so, uses them most often, sometimes in one chapter. Using this technique, he is able to organizes the events of the novel in a way to present various themes and further develop characterization,as well as balancing the events within chapters.

When using this technique, we are able to see many sides to Said's character based on his conflicts. Starting from the first chapter, we see that Said is trying to mend his relationship with his daughter, however, finds himself in a situation where she is not willing to accept him (because she doesn't know who he is). His emotions is switched from affection to revenge. This further develops his inner conflict  which drives the plot.

With the multiple conflicts that Mahfouz employs in the plot, he presents them in a way to further develop Said's character by using past events and flashbacks - to reveal Said's darkest thoughts and emotion. This makes his thoughts unorganised to reflect Said's confused character which shows the complexity of Mahfouz technique. Said's character goes through a number of events, where he is rejected by his daughter, his encounters with Nur and argument with Rauf - causes a shift of emotion, making him filled with revenge through the use of third person narration and interior monologue.

Furthermore, the stream of consciousness is an effective structure throughout the story to create a realistic perspective to explore all aspects, as a result, Mahfouz expresses his ideas to allow the reader to understand the message conveyed.

  1. G'day Keasha.

I found the Blog post to be significantly insightful, It has given me a different perspective, and a chapter where Stream of consciousness was used, yet I was unaware of the use. I feel your example connects to my overall idea that the technique is used to showcase Saids drive for revenge, Furthermore I believe that you have articulated on the different reasons into how it affects the story, however articulating you ideas would have assisted in showcasing the further significance of the technique.Lastly, do you think that the technique could be employed other than to show is revenge, but a different theme?

    Overall good job!
