Blog Post 34 - Fate (Thief and the Dogs)

How does Mahfouz illustrate how fate is a major determiner of one’s happiness in life?

Mahfouz uses various elements to portray the characters in the novel by reflecting values in existing communities in the novel. Mahfouz uses freedom and free will to showcase the historical changes in Egypt - an to what extent my influence/challenge individuals in the era. With this idea, Mahfouz implements a mind set of 'freedom' & 'free -will' (within the context), to show the significance individual and/or group power. Said is illustrated in a way to showcase how fate is a determiner to one's happiness. This is derived from the upbringing (childhood), where he was born in an impoverished household (family belonging to the lower socioeconomic status in the community). Losing both his parents resulted in having Said commit his first theft. Mahfouz is allowing the reader to understand the economic factors that occurred in Egypt - and as a result, lead to ramifications to which individuals in the era behaved recklessly because of the unfair distribution between the different classes.
With this attitude, Said establishes a negative attribute to which influences his fate and future endeavors. With the help of secondary characters, Mahfouz is able to show the fate that Said chooses to pursue - with the behavior, fortune and relationship strength each character presents. For instance, Nur's character is one with brings the path of new beginnings and love; however, Said's character is challenged (because he is now able to show his emotions towards the reader, being able to fall in love again) through the dependence and insecurities that their relationship has brought. Her character is symbolic because she is presented in a lower - economic status (a prostitute) - which was not determined by Mahfouz as to why she was presented in this position, however can be said that she shares a similar background as Said. Within the novel, Nur's character can be seen as a distraction (escape path way) to deviate from his revengeful and violent acts. However, her action of disappearing without any notice made him grow more affection for her - which made him realize how much he loves her and to an extent is dependent on her. This act made Nur realize that she cannot change Said's ways because of past events (betrayal of Ilish and Nabawiyya), which resulted in a negative way to his relationship with Nur.
